Pete Smith was (hope still is) a cool guy. First time I saw his tach tattle tale after a pass I almost fainted. Thought I was really zinging my C/SM Camaro leaving at 9000. LOL
Moving to Modified Eliminatot was sure a learning experience. Learned a lot. Learned to not run aluminium rods too long. Stayed over until a Monday to finish a points race at Baton Rough due to rain one time. Pulled a rod into in the final against Coleman Roddy's black Camaro. Had a new set to put in it, but thought I didn't have time. Told Jeanie "one more race will be OK". She was SO happy with me. LOL The ride home was kinda quiet.

Joe,
I literally was probably standing next to the guy filming this or very close. We would get to the gates EARLY so we could get a fence spot. To be able to relive a weekend like that just one more time.... |

Found a Feb 4, 1977 National Dragster in a pile of my stuff and looked through the National Records. What I found was impressive to me. It was listed that Modified racer David Surles held the ET record for G/Gas, H/Gas, E/MP and the F/MP speed record. I know some will say that G/Gas and E/MP were both 11 pounds and H/Gas and F/MP were 12 pounds, respectively, so there was an easy jump between the classes. Still impressive. That must have been one bad-*** Corvette back in its day.

My dad Kenny Rose was best known locally for his Hemi powered 55 Chevy that he ran in C/Gas, but he wrenched on a G/Gas 58 Corvette for Bob Widmeyer in the mid to late 70's. He often told me of how Division 1 was like war every week in Modified Eliminator.
After he quit racing the 55, his last car was a Hemi powered 1960 Corvette that I believe he purchased from Harry Huntzberry in 1974. He sold that car as a roller in 1998-99 sometime to a guy named Jim Frost near Cumberland, MD. |
