The band in a 350 is to hold the high gear drum so you get engine braking in 2nd gear. There is a clutch pack in the very back of the trans, that applys for 1st gear braking. You typically don't want that the lo/rev clutch on in 1st gear, because when you make the shift from 1st to 2nd it would need to be released, and could cause drag inside. A 1st to 2nd shift is much cleaner if the lo/rev clutch is not on in 1st gear.

Doug, the Turbo Action valve body w/1-2 shift uses the governor system, whereas the ATI eliminates the band and the governor. Of course with the Turbo Action, the shift points are determined by changing the weights and springs in the governor. Your choice!!

Thanks Bob^3240. But is one faster than the other because of band drag?

Neither one uses the band. With a real low first gear, the auto 1-2 shift will make the car more consistent because the shift lite comes up so quickly! You don't need the band for drag racing. Bob Michael

I have built many Turbo 350's using the Turbo Action Auto 1-2 shift valve body, and IMO it is a very good piece of equipment.
