I ordered a S4000 and when I got it it had a synthetic rope. I spoke to Superwinch
and they said its better than a steel cable.I agree about watching for abrasion but its actually rated higher than a steel cable. I'm very happy with it

Synthetic is lighter, of course, and won't fly around if it breaks. As above, don't let it rub the floor, etc. With any line, wrap it on the drum in an orderly fashion, not crisscrossed and jumbled up because one layer will abrade the other.
