Bobby: My brother Joe Martens (B/S '69 Camaro at the time) had a similar problem with the dial type two-step rev limiter back when he first started racing @ 2004. A Super Gas racer offered a MSD single channel digital ignition tester to use to check the ignition (7AL-2 with dial type two-step rev limiter) and it showed that the spark would break up at 6000-6100 RPM. He pulled the unit and sent it back to MSD for a rebuild. Upon receipt of the repaired dial type two-step rev limiter, the same results occurred. We 86'd the dial type and went to the pill type and it worked perfectly.

Bobby - What are you using as your add-on 2-step module? The 6AL-2 uses rotary dials for the low- and high-side rev limiters. I have heard that there have been issues with the rev-limit circuit on some boxes. Hopefully you can find some way to test yours off the car this winter!

I had similar problem at Finals this year.

Lost 1.2 in ET and 12 MPH final qualifier.

Msd checked coil ( Red big HVC/2 ) at a their booth.......Said Fine!

Jon Jr. put new coil on at PSCA and car ran perfect!

I was hoping to find out what add-on module Bobby was using on his 6AL-2. I've been looking for a way to add a third "step" limiter to my system, but from what I've been able to research the -2 has no compatible add-on module available from MSD, just the two built-in settings. I may have to upgrade to another box to take advantage of that third step.

Bobby did you ever fix the 396? I had one do that years ago it was a piece of trash in one of the main jets.
