Anyway, from my point of view, something like that is NHRA's problem, not mine.

If sure that there was no performance advantage by not wearing his jacket.
Sure would be a advantage if got run over by a high index race car!

David, Just curious.
Do you have a low index race car that you race with NHRA?

I think both rule books, east coast and west coast require you to have all your safety gear on during a run. Also wasn't NHRA founded on safety in the 50's to get racing off the streets. also the rule book is a minimum for safety gear you can always have more then required as in more layer suits. If this is not true than we all should be on street outlaws. Since we don't care about safety rules then what about the rest of the rule book could install illegal parts on your car and move on a qualifying sheet to get on the short side of the ladder and change it back for first round?

I checked the rules and you are correct. Short sleeves are OK below M/S-M/SA. The driver in question (I/SA) should have been stopped in staging and required to jacket up. It was way up in the 90s on the track the day in question.

Point is, a racer lost to a guy he thinks should have been DQ'd on a technicality. Just let it go. Short sleeves didn't win the race.

EDIT: From the Stock section. My emphasis.

"PROTECTIVE CLOTHING"
"Full-length pants; short- or long-sleeved shirt; closed shoes; and socks. No shorts. No tank tops. No open-toe or open-heel shoes or sandals. Synthetic clothing not recommended. Jacket and pants meeting SFI Spec 3.2A/1 mandatory in AA/S through M/S, AA/SA through M/SA, and in any vehicle running 11.49 or quicker. SFI Spec 3.3/1 gloves mandatory in any vehicle running 9.99 or quicker. See General Regulations 10:10."

The point is that any racer should be in full race gear, if required, before he or she races. At Pacific Raceway there is a blue line at the head of staging. The only time a racer can be out of his/her gear, after crossing that line, is if there is a time out on the race track. Oildown, rain or broken race car being removed, etc.

Yes the non use of proper gear didn't change the out come of the race, but ALL racers should conform to the rules or what good is the rule book. Especially for the safety gear/clothing part. I believe NHRA was founded for safe racing for all.

I agree. I just don't think this should be debated on the Internet where it won't do any good. Jim needs to point it out to Staff who watch the lanes so that it won't happen again. As far as safety goes, I've seen a roadster without a roll bar run at this track. That disturbed me.

Maybe a drivers meeting to bring this up? My Mustang is a bracket car built to GT/MA standards but I put a full cage in it. Double layer jacket, pants, gloves and shoes, too. SA 2010 helmet.

No I do not have a low index race car because I am 70 years old , not in the best health and retired from racing.
The last race car I had was a F/SA built by Woodrow Josey and a few motors built by Elisha Boyd back in Mississippi.
Do you have a reason for this question?
