Tool steel retainers are fine. If you broke one or more, you'd have broken just about anything, and it was caused by loss of valvetrain control.


I would strongly suggest that you not use DLC coated lifters against anything other than an actual steel core camshaft. While it may be possible to get by with it, it is really likely to result in catastrophic failure.

I think there may be another company that could do it.

I use the gas plasma nitriding service Comp offers. They do offer a polishing service as well.
