My thought is the light ends of gasoline that evaporate quicker (butane, etc.) have the higher octane ratings than the heavier molecules. Maybe the problem becomes detonation instead of going lean?

You would be correct. BUT, if the cans remained sealed and the day temps didn't get high enough for the cans to leak it should be ok. I would sample it at a sanctioning track to be sure it passes tech. That would be my only concern as well.
