I used to promote musclecar shows/races and we booked Union Grove back in the 80s. It is the only track I've ever been to where the announcer is shilling 12 packs of Old Style instead of hot dogs. Looking at the stands, I'd guess every 2nd or 3rd person had a pack on the floor in front of them. So if things are still the same, I'm only surprised that this sort of thing doesn't happen more often there.
Gateway in St Louis has had Black Sunday for years. It's put on by a benevolent organization with proceeds going to help those in need. It has been there for years and other than the NHRA nationals seems to be one of the track's largest events. I have never heard of any problems those weekends, other than the minor stuff that happens at every race. And yes, the gates are open to all and they pay good prize money. The gang shootings are out of control in most of the country. I hate to see them happening at a track because every national news source I saw referred to it as a drag strip/drag racing shooting.
