Now days they have these things called measuring tools. Surely you have seen a tape measure ? And who uses gum to check valve clearance on a racing engine, because I want to stay away from them.

Gum, or even clay. So 1950.

It worked perfectly !
I knew exactly how much tolerance there was! Pack the gum onto the hole around the half the stud. Tighten the lugs..remove the wheel and measure the impression. Just like you do with Cylinder Heads and questionable Valve Clearance. Plastiguage is used for Measuring Crank Bearing tolerances. It was simple and effective. Get over it ! |

You THINK you know how much clearance you have.

Carry on, you seem to have it all under control. I have evidently been measuring things wrong all this time. Could have saved a lot of money over the years buying useless measuring equipment when I could have just bought a pack of juicy fruit.

I've used 1/2" studs before, my platform came from the factory with 1/2" studs. But I will never run them again in a race application - 5/8 studs all the way. Not being able to run a stock style wheel is a very small concession to make in the name of safety. When in doubt, drill them out to 11/16 or 45/64ths and get a second set of nut spacers machined to match the modified lug nut seat on the wheels.
