I raced a 283 for a few seasons in a wagon similar to Captain Jack. I know either in the late 50 s or early 60 s Chevy had a turboglide but I am not sure it came behind a 283. Every 283 I have seen had a PG behind it ...maybe Billy Nees or Mark Yac can chime in....When Steve Tarrance was kicking Azz with his 6 cylinder Chevy 11 he was running a 4 speed...

Turboglides did come in 283 powered cars starting in '57, not sure when they dropped them, maybe '61. A three speed was never factory installed behind a 283 that I remember but some late 50's pickups came with a 283 and the 4 speed hydro, the sedan deliveries were considered trucks so that's how they were able to use the hydros.
350 transmissions were not introduced until 1969, no three speeds for the 64's, the '65 big cars used the turbo 400 for the first time behind the 396. The turbo 400 was used behind small blocks in '68 big cars and some '68 pickups and of course in Vettes for several years. Ironically the '66 Chevelle 396 auto cars were powerglides. I'm pretty sure Tarrances car was a three speed. No documentation for backup but the way I remembered it. |

Sedan Delivery has 4 Speed Hydro in 50's
All others were Powerglides Hence the popularity of the Sedan Delivery Wagons. I am even older than you Mike!

I've never seen a 283 car with a 3 speed auto in it, not counting turboglides which were 3 speed autos. The FIRST smallblock car that I ever saw with a 350 turbo in it was/is a 68 Camaro 327/275 bought NEW by a Bracket Racer in N.J. and he STILL has the car.
To my knowledge you couldn't get a 4 speed behind a 6 cyl. in a Chevy II but you COULD in a Camaro. I've owned two.

Correct me if I am wrong. The sedan delivery did not come with the 4 speed hydro. NHRA declared them to be a light duty truck, and allowed the hydro to be run in them, but the trans came in pickup trucks.

Did anyone else notice that a turboglide 283 had a larger pilot bearing hole then a powerglide or stick car {just the hole size } or did I get the only one ever made ? A normal sized pilot bearing was too small for the hole in the crank but I did find an aftermarket one that worked for a stick trans setup. I did break the crank but that was my fault

I am pretty certain we sold Steve all of our GM three speed stuff (well used) when we went to the Nash 4-1 trans in early 1977.
