The aluminum Powerglide was phased in starting in 1962 behind the Chevy 327 engine . So if you have a cast iron tailshaft housing it must be earlier than 1963 .

The issue with Bill's question is that he seems to be describing an aluminum powerglide in ref to a 1.76 gear and fine spline.
Yet, he is talking about a "steel" rear housing. The question does not compute. Is it possible he has a very rare Steeluminum hybrid?

Someone was breaking rear mounts or tail housings and found a cast one... to help stop it and Bill ended up with it.
