There is no rule about going as fast as you want to go. You just have to be willing to pay the price if you choose to run real fast, My belief is that if you can run faster than 1.20 under then your combo is under factored and needs to be adjusted. This is how the AHFS is supposed to work. Its not a perfect system because most racers are doing their best to protect their combo. Not a bad thing but just the way it is. I also believe that a 1.20 under run should be treated just like a record run and the car should be torn down and inspected to make sure that it is 100% compliant with the rule book before the factor on that combo is hit.

James and Billy,,for the next year or 2 no new engines. If I could learn how to drive again definitely a new Pro build engine would be 1st priority. But its kinda sad many guys put lots of time and $$$ into their combination and years of testing to be penalized for their long hard work. I still saw,,Let the guys run,,if someone is 1.40 plus under then check them out. We all know most combo's there are guys that can run 1.20 under.

I forgot,,it's very pleasing that so far we've run 11.33 at 116.18 in G/SA 69 Camaro with an engine I built with maching from a great machinest at a local NAPA,,Gary Waters.

Mike I believe if your a performance type of person and you really want to go fast and you can't go 1.20 you need to work on your stuff. And yes spend some money. I hope no one told you Stock and Super Stock is a cheap class to run. It can be but your not going to realize the true performance of your combo. With all the enhancements we have had over the last 15 years I don't think there are many combo's that can't achieve that performance. I bought a 74 Corvette from a nice guy in Tn about 6 years ago. When we picked it up he told us that it was a tough combo with the HP rating and didn't think it was a good car any more for the class. A year and a half later we were going 10.70's in G/SA. Now I have a 1970 Camaro. Bought from another real nice guy. He bought motors from several different builders including Armstrong and Ficcaci . The fastest that I have seen him run was low 10.20's in great air. Here a year and a half later I was running 10.0's this past weekend in the heat with still more left. My point again there is always more to get out of your car. And by the way it still has the motor in it that as when I bought it from him. Yes the best Brian Thilburg has freshened it up for me.
MY brother and I have preached to our friends for years. Find 10 things that only give you a .01 and you now have a tenth. Get lucky on some of those ten things and you could have a lot more. On the 3 hr ride home from the track this weekend all I could think about all the way home were those 10 things I need to do to the car. BP

You are probably right on most points. Personally my car is not capable of running that fast and I know of no other car in my same combo that is capable of running a second under. I don’t have the time or money to run at the top of the Q sheet but I do enjoy racing super stock. I know my limitations and am happy with my performance given what I have. Nothing against some that work to find combos that are more competitive than others. I just don’t see that many that can run faster then the 1.20 barrier. I guess we will see what everyone has at Indy when the gloves come off. I bet some will still be on the brakes at the end not to show all that they have. I would if I was in that position.

Barry,
To be fair I think you left out one important fact in this post. And that is the gentleman you bought your car from may have been a really nice guy but he found this car to be very challenging and he became extremely frustrated and just walked away. I wish I was that smart. But he rarely, if ever, got a clean pass with the car and decided to let it go cheap. I don't think it's helpful to call out Ficacci and Armstrong while praising Thilburg, no matter how soft you make it appear. In all probability, the former owner of your car would have had just as much trouble with the car if he had a Thilburg motor in it.
