You should have 4 wires from the 2 step. Grey tied in to tach and Ign box, Red to 12 v, Black to ground and Blue to switched 12v ( normally open ).

Was it a new 2 step? No red light when activated by 12v on the blue wire?

???? Did you check with a volt meter that you are energizing it with 12 volts? You maybe losing voltage if your going through a brake light switch. That's all I got.
