There were several beautiful Corvettes that raced out of Montgomery, AL back in the 70's and 80's. One was a candy apple red '62 owned and driven by Bill Bethea. Another was a black '63 (IIRC), owned and driven by Al Capatel. These were IHRA cars, so they prob weren't seen much outside of the Southeast. Surely someone has some pics of those.
I'm told that Bill still owns his car, not sure about Al. Bill's business partner, Kenneth Dickey also had a 'Vette. I believe his was also a '62, which ran in S/S. Another was the McCann, Cowles and Kamakowski car, driven by Stanley Kamakowski, which was white and was a '67 or '66. (IIRC) These cars were all Modifieds except for Kenneth's and all were immaculate and always well-prepared. Anyone remember those cars? Last edited by Terry Drinkwater; 01-07-2021 at 08:29 AM. Terry,
I remember these racers and their cars well. They were good racers who ran at Phenix City and Montgomery quite a bit, I always admired their Corvettes and not surprised that Bill still has his. Jimmy Parker |

I remember the Ault & James car when I was a child (54 now). I also found the pic of that car in dad's old collection of Corvette News from the US Nats (taking out the tree after breaking the engine on the starting line) back in the mid 1970's. Would love to see that car again,....maybe racing at Norwalk in the future. I loved watching and listening to all the Vette's in Modifed when dad and I would head down to Columbus for the Spring Nationals when I was a youngster. I like Randy Wilson's Nostalgia Modified idea.
Thanks, Ron P. Last edited by RonP; 01-09-2022 at 04:24 PM. Reason: numerous corrections |
