I think the last car to run on water was a Stanley Steamer.Somewhere around 1918.

The last car I had that burned water was my wifes 1992 Cougar 3.8 with the perverbial blown head gasket.Looked like a WWII destroyer setting down a smoke screen.

The Tornado worked in some cars. It was a propellor looking metal insert for the air inlet tube. I believe we picked up some 1-2 miles per on the highway...In an Impala. Did not work in Envoy 6 cylinder...

.........Actually in World War Two, some american fighter aircraft were equipped with water injection, to be used as an emergency short burst of power. during dogfights. most notably in the Pacific theatre. Wonder why no one ever tried that technology on a drag racing engine? Would not have to buy nitrous!!

Water Injection system kits are still available for automotive use. Even Edelbrock used to sell a unit some years ago: the nozzle attached to the choke tower and it used a vacumm switch to activate the system. Water injection is still used on small helicopter turbine engines for high altitude/hot day operations.

I was under the impression that water injection stops pinging but does cause a drop in HP

...... good article, still can't help but think.....about a turboed car, say in comp eliminator, or maybe super stock, [don't know the rules] and decide to set a record or maybe have a tight race next round, crank up the boost, and spray water, do not know how it would work, but as I read it, in that scenario you can get a short term HP increase.

In a piston engine, it prevents pinging by cooling the combustion chamber and protecting the engine; there are not power gains. In a turbine engine, it cools down the hot section of the combustor so the pilot does not exceed the EGT and torque limits of the turbine engine.

That was a water/alchohol mix. I used to work on old Air Force cargo planes that used the same system (Called ADI, for Anti Detonation Injection) during take-offs.
