I didn’t think any of the middle timers mattered for et but my car has been parked several years so I thought I would check. This all sounded better in my head than when I reread it guess I’m going to need to stop listening to those sounds.

You must have never raced at some of the lower level tracks where timing system problems are common. Have raced where the middle timers and suck didn't work, we still bracket raced but it's tougher to dial the car. MPH is figured from the 594' to the 660' in 1/8mi timing, I don't remember the footage in 1/4.

I was interested in et at finish line only and if any of the timers from start to finish were needed for scoreboard to show it.

The intermediate timers have nothing to go with the finish line et timer. Does not matter if they work or not.

MPH in the quarter used to be 66' before and 66' after the 1/4 et stripe. They changed it years ago to only 66' before the stripe.

Speaking of the 594' mark, does anybody know why it's 66ft? If the only thing it does is serve as a reference time to calculate speed based on the time it takes to traverse that span, why is it 66 feet? Why not 10 or 20? Seems arbitrary to me.

66ft would be 1/10 of an 1/8th mile and 1/20 of a 1/4 mile, but you could easily use any increment you want. I don't know why the people who invented timing systems used that distance and I've never been able to see why in all my research.

Ya: So originally it was 132' which of course is 1/10th of the quater mile. Wally set all that up. Easier to calculate in the late 50's ?
