Default Painting with Graphics Question

OK I am not building a "Dime Rocket" but could not spend thousands on a paint job for my 65 Impala I am building for I/SA I have done paint jobs using 2 Stage Base coat/ clear coat but for the 65 I want to paint Silver base coat then apply graphics/striping in Candy Apple REd (over the silver) I think this is the order I need to do:

1) base coat of silver
2) coat of clear over that
3) mask the silver areas and scuff up painting areas
4) 1 coat of clear (to sort of seal up mask area to stop any Candy Red bleed through)
5) scuff again then Paint Candy Red
6) remove mask then clear coat everthing.

Please no "call this guy he can do a good job and only $10,000" BUT any input would be appreciated!

I would use SPI intercoat clear on page 1 http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/#!products/c19pa[url]. No sanding required. Do your graphics followed with their Universal clear.

Rusty thank you very much for your response. I went to that website do you mean the "Production Clear" or the Universal Clear? I don't see anything specific to"intercoat clear" , is that just a general term for clear between basecoats?

You see I already have all the paint in house. My buddy had his car painted had way lot left over plus i bought paint for this project already.

So leaving the clearcoat choices out, am I right in the sequence and way to paint the car with the graphics? Can't seem to find any info online, but looking at your car plus i was following the Fairlane i think you were doing you know what you are talking about.

Bottom of the page there is an arrow click on it to get to page one and at the top is the intercoat clear. The SPI intercoat clear is like spraying base and you won't have to sand it before the graphics. If you already have clear than you will do it your way. When I painted my Mustang I sprayed the base and two coats of clear. Next day wet sanded with 600 and sprayed the candy colors followed with Universal clear. At that time (2005) SPI did not have the intercoat clear.

Rusty is spot on with his suggestion. Most paint companies have a product similar to the one he suggested. Saves a lot of time this way and saves money since you are not using expensive final clearcoat each time.

Are you guys referring to what PPG calls an adhesion promoter? A product used instead of sanding before applying a second coat after the first has gassed out too long? I'm setting up paint for my Mustang next week.
