Default NHRA Division 7 gets another Divisional

Over this past weekend I got a call from a fellow racer that knows I work part time at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix. He said there is a rumor that there will be an additional Divisional at Firebird. I contacted my boss who is the Operations Manager at Firebird. Yesterday he confirmed that there will be an additional Divisional at Firebird.

Current plans are for the track to host a Test and Tune the Wednesday after the National Event. The first Divisional will be on Thursday and Friday of that week. The second Divisional will be the Saturday and Sunday of that week. He also advised that the TA Dragsters and TA Funny Cars will only race on Saturday and Sunday.

For me, and the racers in the Phoenix area, this is better than the Phoenix Divisional being followed by the Tucson Divisional the following week ,like it use to be. It should be less expensive for all racers.

I will keep you posted as I get more information.

Yes the extra divisional is a bonus but lets look at the logisticts.... A racer not only took off half of the previous week for the National but now has to take an additional half of a week off work to run the divisionals. Also barring no mechanical failures(lord knows those dont happen) you will be spending $600.00 just in fees in 2 weekends. Not to mention fuel food etc.... with no time to financially recover or repair if you break. This could be hard for some racers. Financially good and timed for NHRA sucks for the average racer

Well, you don't have to go to both divisionals. Just go to the second one on Saturday and Sunday.

Which would you rather have, two divisionals in Phoenix on the same weekend or one in Phoenix and one in Bakersfield?

Wow. A double-header Divisional race. I didn't come up with that idea until 2004.

Can anybody confirm this with an email or something in writing? Called the track waiting to here back from them. Could be a great 8 days if you get on a hot streak.

Bob,

That would be me and mrice@nhra.com is the email address. Do you really think I'm happy about losing the race close to you?
