Nascar and NHRA don't get it. They raised prices when the ecomomy was good and business was booming. Aimed for a higher class / wealthier patron and they got them for a while. But they were fair weather / newbies, had their fill, been there done that and moved on.
But prices have stayed the same, and the stands show it. Notice TV coverage of any NASCAR or NHRA race, they do their best not to show the stands. I guess the TV money makes up for empty stands.

But it's hard to sell hot dogs, t-shirts, etc. to an empty seat!

Ever notice that the main stands in nascar look like confetti? When the camera pans by fast its hard to tell that the seats are empty.

I had some time in between rounds at the Divisional and National event at Las Vegas this year. I drove around and looked at the NASCAR track. I thought the stands were packed, but they were not racing. I went into the infield and looked at the stands. The seats are painted red, white, and blue in what looks like a random pattern, and there were no spectators. When you are farther away you would swear that there are people on the seats. Some computer guru must have come up with a pattern to make it look like there are people in the stands. Now I pay attention when I watch NASCAR at the large tracks. If I look carefully I can see that a lot of the stands are empty, but the paint scheme makes it look like people are sitting in them. This works especially well in the overhead shots. I bet if you look closely you will be able to see this too.

They have that same pattern at the 4-Wides. I rolled in a day early and thought I was missing something. A brilliant idea it is. Tricksy!!

The Summernationals were always hot, and if they were to look at a calander, it is still Spring. I went from '71 until we moved to Fla. in '81 and it was always PACKED and hot. What I saw on t.v. today as far as spectators were concerned was shocking, but at those prices, not really. I also do not remember hearing very many commericals on the radio for this race, and since we have verizon for cable t.v., I didn't see one, just the normal lawyer/car dealer localy targeted types.

The stands were 90% full on Friday night show and fully packed on Saturday. But tickets were free.

Almost all of 'em! The rest had to stand at the fence.
