Question for Ford Techs

Yesterday I was at Irwindale Raceway for a T&T and when
I went to start up my truck (2004 F350 6.0 diesel) the fuel
gauge went to FULL (it had been at 1/2 tank when I parked)
and by the time I drove the 30 miles home it now reads about
a 1/8th of a tank above the 1/2 mark.

What happened?

My 2000 goes to a higher level than when I parked it UNLESS I park on a level spot--either reads more or less depending whether it is nose up or tail up---mine takes a coupla minutes or miles to register what is really in the tank---also will do the samething if I put fuel in while it is running takes a bit to register what is really in there--If ya turn the engine off and then back on it will register immediately fuel level--- my 2001 gas truck makes no difference goes to actual level immediately no matter which way I have it parked--comp

I don't have a solution, but can add that the fuel gauge in my 2003 F250 6.0L has a mind of its own as well. The opposite occurs; after pumping a tank full, the darn thing won't register the change until it feels like it - anywhere from 5-20 miles down the road. In our nasty environment I've blamed it on a ground issue, but I'm not sure that would apply in your case Phil.

Regarding my post I purchased my truck new and it has over 200,000 miles on it now---mine has done the same thing since the day I bought it

i work for ford and we have a pcm reflash for this concern on the 03 to 07 6.0l diesels but it only cures about 50% of the trucks the others get a new sender in the tank

I've had the same issue with mine. So I always make a habit to reset the trip odometer just in case.

So far this was a one time only deal for me. But I usually always
reset the trip odometer and then I also have the miles left guage
on the ceiling console.
