Default Friday Day One Qualifying Boise Report

Got thru a very hot day here in Boise. The temperature was in the mid to upper 80's today. First round of qualifying was at 9AM with the density altitude around 3800 feet. Faster than the test and tune day but not the mineshaft conditions that would be nice to see. After that the air hovered in the 5500 feet range. Steve Wann broke a rear end on the last qualifying run in the stocker. Not sure if he can get it back together or not but knowing Steve I sure he will back tommorow morning. Not sure what records were set. I think (but don't quote me on this) Charlie Smith was tearing down for the B/SA record. Bill Kost had an "R" on his window. I didn't see him tearing down so I'm not sure whats happening there. Don Little set the GT/FA record and as far as I know was tearing down. To answer Jeff Lee's question about Rob's new dual 7 inch clutch all I can say is that I'm 60 footing at Boise what I used to 60 foot at sea level. So I can speculate that its probably worth 7-9 hundreths at least in my combination. All around a fun but hot day. Traction was great. From the second round on there was about a 5-6 MPH headwind. Off for a cold beer and supper.

Is Don Little running a 440-9? That would explain SS/FA. Lately he has been running SS/JA with a 383. But he does have 440-6 and even Hemi in his inventory. Must be nice!

Yeah, that 440-"9" explains EVERYTHING!!!

No replacement for carburetion!!! LOL!

Good afternoon, Jeff,

Closer inspection of the qualifying sheet suggests that Don is continuing to run the same 383 combination with a single carburetor. He's in GT/FA not SS/FA. GT/FA is merely half-a-pound per horsepower lighter than the SS/JA weight. No Hemis or 6 or 9-paks are necessary.

Oh yes....that GT vs SS category. Keep forgetting about that option!

Bill, that 44-9 was an option. It was 2 four's with a single in the middle. Helped idle characteristics and something with emmissions. It was export only though, probably not allowed in NHRA.

Thanks for the technical explanation, Jeff. That combination was probably to counter the "smallish" 4-bbl they didn't have on the 440 single-carb engine that I reported on ever so erroneously a week or so ago.

Dwight straightened out the mess I made of that; beware, you may be next....
