i am thinking of speeding things in my camp! one of the options i am considering is going to the 396 combo. i want to be NHRA legal this time as well as IHRA. Looking at the NHRA site i can not tell what aftermarket aluminum heads would be legal for the stock combination? While we are it, what carb would be required. Thanks

Ian,
Not enough info. Need to know year and mod of car you plan to use or claim. The alum head for some cars can be a stock GM (number specific for make and mod) or the Edelbrock 401 casting. Edelborck head usually carries a weight penalty. The carb number will show in the classification guide. (blueprint specs) You don't have to use the specific carb number any more, but it has to be same make with the venturi and throttle bores that match the legal numbered carb. Those numbers show up in the guide, too.

Might also keep in mind that if you have a '68 Camaro, you can only run that combo with a stick.

What Jim said. And if you're going to run a stick, the iron head is the ticket.
Mickey does have some good pieces, his car runs.

Aaaah, i missed the stick part. Heres what i'd like to do: 1968 Camaro stocker with an automatic that runs 9.90 to 10.1. weight is not an issue. i can get down to 2750 with an iron headed SBC and glide combo (less driver), 2990 with driver minimum (6ft 4" 240lbs driver....stop the snickering). I'd like it to be NHRA legal as i could do what i am trying to accomplish very easily with a fastburn IHRA combo.
what about small tire super stock. is that legal in NHRA too? is it legit to put a super stock legal motor and carb in front of a trans brake glide and call it a GT/ what-ever-the-f-it-is auto super stocker? Ian |

Yes, you could run it as a Big Block GT/ SS.. whatever, but those cars take a beating from the frontwheel drive conversions in GT. You can also do it as a Small block. I'm not sure if the SB GT classes are as bad as the BB.
also: I dont snicker at guys my size. :~) It is tough to get all of me out of some cars. I love those swing out door bars.

You're not going to run that number with an NHRA legal Stock Eliminator 68 Camaro with an automatic transmission.
Yes, you can run GT classes with an early Camaro. Just do not expect to be competitive, you'll be up against late model stuff that is small, light, and slippery. The fastest automatic combination in Stock for you would probably be a 396/350, but it won't run 10 flat. You could possibly run the 396/350 automatic combination on a 9" tire in Super Stock. You'll need a full cage, and you'll work real hard to make it work. Honestly, the iron head 396/375 stick in Stock is the way to go in order to run the number you want to run.

i was looking for a stock combo before i looked into the ss possibilities. i assume i could run a bit quicker yet with the combo i have just by pumping up the tires and going to a lighter weight oil, but i was looking for for a bracket setup 10, rather than an on-kill 10 program.
