Proban is a chemical process to make different fabric (usually cotton) flame retardant. In general it is stiffer, heavier and cheaper. Nomex is a flame retardant fabric (needs no treatment). It comes in different weaves with "functions", some breathe some stretch some is shiny etc etc. In general a Nomex fabric gives better comfort.

There are other fabrics that are/were available on production or custom bases. Durette and PBI/Kevlar are two such.

Today many nomex fabrics have a 5% (para aramid) Kevlar Mix.

I've used both but the nomex is so much more comfortable, both sets of my gear are Sparco bought from Biondo...great product and great service.
