Jeff I agree with you on all of this. The Edelbrock head listed in the flyer I quoted has straight plugs.I'm thinking this is the same head that Edelbrock makes for MP also and they are marketing it themsleves as well for the S/S classes.

A. Cylinder Heads, Aluminum
Head casting number 452 is complete with valves and springs (2.14" intake and 1.81" exhaust). Flow is 290 cfm intake and 217 cfm exhaust at .600" lift. These ready-to-bolt-on Heads use a straight plug design so you can use stock exhaust manifolds or many popular aftermarket headers. 361 and 440 Engines 1 P5153524 Cylinder Head, Aluminum, Includes Valves and Springs, Straight Plug, 84cc, 2.14" Intake / 1.81" Exhaust, "B/RB" Engines Anyone understand why MP made this head? It has the 452 casting number on the runner, then has oversized valves? Why didn't they make one with stock size valves? It would be easier to make it legal with stock size valves.

Standard old B/RB engines use 2.08"I / 1.72"E valves.

2.08/1.74 in B/RB heads. I think the 2.25/2.00 in the Edelbrock flyer is a misprint.

The NHRA specs make one take the head, pull the big valves and narrow stems, and put in the 2.08 etc. I disagree with this policy and think they should allow the head as-produced with it's own factor, say 10 better than the stock and let the system work. A real money saver there. This subject has been somewhat vetted by the Ford guys with the Edlebrock heads. Hawk tried to get the ruling I favor, but I don't think it got done. Maybe they feel better now.

Jeff, The 390 Ford Iron head has a 144 cc intake runner and a 103 exhaust runner. The Edlebrock head has a 173 cc intake and a 123 exhaust and is rated 8 hp more than the iron counterpart. You can find those heads everywhere.
I agree with you, what ever Edlebrock produces as a replacement add HP to it and let the system work. So we as the racers can buy new available, and afordable castings to race with. Plus we can support the people putting money into our sport. The Ram Air 2 cylinder head castings for the car I run, is Impossible to find. The set on the car cost 2500.00 just for the castings. I'd take 20 HP just to be able to buy them. NHRA need to be flexible and work with us in allowing some new parts so we can keep racing our cars. Something everybody should fight for that has to purchase rare and expensive castings. Just my 02 cents Quote:

NHRA had the MOPAR MAGNUM R/T head as a legal replacement (plus 5hp), since this head was discontinued and MOPAR had a new head that was not legal I asked Bruce if we could get another head legal for competition for the crack prone Magnum heads....the heads I sent him info on were both iron like the R/T head. I was surprised to see the aluminum Edelbrock Magnum head declared as the legal replacement, going to be pretty expensive to get a set prepped and ready to go....
D L Rambo..... Magnum only 1992 to 2003 |
