While lookin thru my pics, I ran across this pic, of a SS/IA '68 Bird, I have labeled as Marty McKinney. Don't have a clue where I got it.

So, is this the same McKinney Bird we've been talkin about ?

Well, according to this thread, Marty is Mike's son. The poster said that Mike won SS at the '77 US Nats. But it was Stock that he won, in Truman Fields original Bird. The pics were from photobucket, so they don't work anymore(but I found it). The info is in posts #998948 & 998949. Photobucket has really messed up lots of car forums.

I believe this is the SS/IA car that Mike McKinney ran along time in the 80’s and early 90’s. It was red when Mike raced it. He was pictured in a Comp
Cams advertisement for a while doing a big wheelstand. His son Marty runs the car now in brackets these days. But the car is basically the same other then a bracket engine.

The car that Mike won stock at the 77 US Nationals, and also was won by Truman 4 years earlier is owned by Mark Waymouth and has been restored to race condition.

The car I own was Truman Fields last race car and was acquired from Mike and Roy in a trade for the original Hard Times 1. Truman took my car in trade from Roy. ( picture below 1977 )

Mike’s son Marty is on Facebook. He would be the guy to contact if your looking for info. I have talked to him several times over the years.

It’s cool all the information you’re posting about on here.
Lots of info on Facebook as well about and a ton of pictures coming up as well. As for this site. Pontiac’s have sort of died off in class racing. It’s a Ford, Chevy, and Mopar world these days. A few diehards left but that’s about it.

Just a time long ago when Pontiac’s were popular and prevalent. The NHRA won’t give us any replacement parts for these cars anymore so it’s tough to keep or want to keep them going. The few that are left run well and win races still. But just not that many overall.

Great info Todd ! Thanks !

I'll try to contact Marty. Sounds like the best way to get pics of all their stuff.

"...The car I own was Truman Fields last race car and was acquired from Mike and Roy in a trade for the original Hard Times 1. Truman took my car in trade from Roy. ( picture below 1977 )..."

So then, that means that the car he raced at the 2006 Gator Nats, is the car you have now ?

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop

What color was it when he raced at the Gators ? Was this the same car that was burgandy ? I know you've explained this to me before. But hey, I'm old. So I'll use that for an excuse.

So, are we only talking about 3 '68 Birds here. (1) The original 2-time Indy winner, which has been restored. (2) The traded car that you have now. (3) The former McKinney SS/IA car that Marty is bracket racing now. Have I got it all straight now ? Or were there more than 3 Birds involved here ?

If I have it right, the original is restored, as a piece of Pontiac history. Yours is still an active Stocker. And Marty is now bracket racing with the McKinney SS/IA car. Does that sound right ?

As far as I'm concerned, all these cars are an important part of Pontiac history, because Truman was my 1st Pontiac hero, and the McKinney's got their claim to fame with Truman's car.

PS: WOW ! Looks like Marty's FB page has all the pics I'll need. I'll download 'em & post some here. I sent Marty a friend request, so I can get more info. I know the last 3 pics are of a Stocker. But it's a bit of Pontiac history. So, I'm posting it on the SS thread, also.

OK, I've already mentioned the '69 SS Bird that Keri Angeles Pari drives. I don't know of another '69 SS Bird. If ya'll know of another, past or current, please post that info.

For now, lets move on to early 2nd gen Birds. I don't think very many have ever tried a '70 model. But, beginning in '71, when the 455HO engine came along, I assume there have been several of these '71-'72 455HO cars run in SS, thru the years.

So, can you guys name some of 'em ?

I can't think of a one. But, there have been a few '73's running SS, because of the SD455 engine. Still some running. I've mentioned Russ Abrams and John & J.B. Clegg. Found a pic of Bob Michael in a '73 SD455 Formy. The pic is not very good. Does anybody have or know where to find a better pic of this car, as well as any other SS Pontiac he's had ? Anybody know what happened to this Bob Michael car, or how it ran ?

OK, I'm gonna try to make a list of all the names mentioned here.

(1) Johnny Duncan

(2) Phil Monteith

(3) Herslow & Morlock

(4) Phil Szupka

(5) Freddy Moore

(6) Bob Bales

(7) Tony Reiter

[8) Bob Michael

(9) Ken Shawver

(10) Monte Howard

(11) Wilbert Thornton

(12) Mike Morgan

(13) Sal---Not sure if that's supposed to be Sal Biondo, or ?

OK, I've mentioned numbers 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, & 12.

I found that the Ken Shawver car picked up several US Nats class wins, with both he & Monte Howard driving. Those stats are still posted on DRC. Assume they probably did good at other tracks, also.

Some of these guys have had lots of cars, including Bob Michael & Phil Monteith, for sure. Both have had Stock & SS Pontiacs.

Haven't seen anything about numbers 4, 5, & 6. Would like more info and/or pics.

Found pics of a Tony Reiter car. I'll post some more pics here. Would love to know what major races any/all these guys have won, including big class wins, & nat records. Especially nice if there is some sort of written or online info documenting their accomplishments.

And again, if I can't come up with pics of all the cars, would appreciate any pics you guys could supply, or tell me a source for.

The 1st pic is the Herslow & Morlock SS car, then the Bob Michael 73 Bird, then what I understand to be the same car after Don Kennedy bought it, then a '77 or '78 Bird with Bob Michael & Bob Peters names on the door, then 2 pics of the Tony Reiter car with slightly different paint.

PS: Last night I added some pics, scattered throughout both the Stock & SS threads.
