Sometimes I'll do that when there's multiple possibilities & have no idea which one. I dont even know that it's one of those 3 - just my best guesses. So I did that for Scoville F/SA. For Sargi in B/SA, that 67 RamAir1 was about the only one that made sense unless it was a 421 Super Duty Bonneville which I didnt think existed. So I just put that one guess down, but still a guess. Re: Best B.O.P. stock and super stockers of all time
Well, I've pretty much covered Pontiacs up thru the last year of an auto trans equipped 400 engine, in '78.
But, that leaves all the Pontiac powered GT Super Stockers. Since Don Kennedy helped write the GT rules, I'll mention his GT cars 1st. He had a 3rd gen Bird, with SD455 power. Then went to a 428 powered Sunfire, which he still races. It runs low 9's. It got the GT/EA class win @ Indy, in 2019. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=355810 Then, don't know if these cars qualify for this thread, or not. They're Pontiac powered, but the bodies are Cobalt. Robert Cruzen ran 8.90 to win the GT/AA class at Indy, in 2016. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2016#indextop The other one belongs to Irvin Johns. Todd Frantz drove it to the Indy '19 GT/FA class win. This year at Indy, Irvin was #20 @ .956 under, & won the GT/EA class, in an All-Pontiac 428 powered final. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2021#indextop https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2021#indextop I suppose the most well known & winningest Pontiac powered GT cars are the Phil Monteith "Hatari" Birds. Phil had a 3rd gen. IIRC, it ran a 6X head 400. Peter Biondo drove it to his 1st SS championship. It was sold to Bruce Fulper, who won class @ Indy, with it. Then Phil built a 4th gen. Peter won 2 more championships with it. Others have driven it, also. Phil also provides Hatari Pontiac power for the Pickett & Agneta 4th gen. John Agneta currently drives the car. It is said to be the former Johnny Duncan car. Leo Glasbrenner ran a 4th gen for a few years. Greg Meyer has run a nice 3rd gen for several years. Will use 2 posts for these GT cars. Re: Best B.O.P. stock and super stockers of all time
Victor Santos had a strong 3rd gen, which now belongs to Bill Kennedy. It qualified near the top of a lot of div 1 race Q-lists. I think this fact is interesting. Vic was #3 at the 1st New England Nats, in 2013, #2 in '14, & #1 in '15.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=271396 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=286517 https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=300185 Steve Smith had a strong 3rd gen. It made the field at Indy, several times. In '09 it qualified @ #52, with a 1.13 under, 9.97. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop It is now raced by Scott Burton. IIRC, it now has 428 power. At Indy this year, it ran an .844 under, 9.556, which was good enuff for #55. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2021#indextop Brad Burton also drives it some. He picked up his 1st Lucas Oil Series Super Stock win, last year. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop The Lynn McCarty family has raced 2 GT cars. One is a 3rd gen. The other is a late model Grand Am, I think. I believe they've run both an SD455 & a 428. At Indy this year, the GA was #76 @ .759 under. Carroll Warling has a '74 GTO which he runs in GT. I think he runs a '74 400 in it. Not sure. He also now runs his '74 Lemans in GT. I think it now has an iron head 428 in it. Long time Pontiac Stock racer Larry Maxwell now has a '68 Bird, which he runs in GT, with '74 350 Pontiac power. Will work on the pics. Last edited by oldskool; 09-20-2021 at 04:44 PM. |
