I am with Wes on this one.
A day of 1/8 mile racing beats the hell out of a day with no racing! I hope to be there Thursday eve.

A lot of people don't care for 1/8 mile because theres less time to play games with the rubber necking and things like that. Things happen fast. I prefer it but I also hate shoe polish. So until I decide to move to comp and spend a ton of money I'm stuck with it. My car is pretty boring once I click it into high at the 1/8th. The majority of the acceleration is all done. Just steer it and spin the bejesus out of it.

Yep. In 1972, Tommy Ivo ran ths sports first 5 second Top Fuel run at Keystone Raceway Park (now Pittsburgh Raceway Park) to become the first member of the Cragar 5 Second Club. Back then, T/F cars were running 235-240. Since then, braking systems have improved, the track's shutdown has been lengthened, and we're worried we don't have enough room to stop for cars running 30-50 mph slower? I have always been a big IHRA fan, and I agree with Wes, racing is still racing, and I have no problem running 1/8 mile races, if the issue is shutdown area (Dragway 42 was a 1/4 mile track that ran 1/8 mile IHRA Div races, and for good reason). I would just prefer to run 1/4 mile when it wouldn't be an issue. I think one of the IHRA Div 4 races this year ran T/D and T/S on the 1/8 and everyone else on the 1/4, why not here?

I've never been to Pittsburgh, so I can't comment on the length of the track there. I was thinking of going, but I have a little too much on my plate at the moment.
What I can't understand is the negativity towards 1/8 mile racing. Being from PA, I'm a 1/4 mile guy myself. I didn't really like 1/8 racing at first, only because I wasn't used to it. This year, it seems that I've done more 1/8 mile than 1/4 mile racing. I'm really starting to like the 1/8 mile racing. I think it makes you a better driver because it is over pretty quick. When I run 1/4 mile anymore, I feel like it takes all day to get to the finish line. If you haven't tried 1/8 mile, or only raced it once or twice, give it a chance. If you want a real treat, go to Spencer Speedway in NY. 1/10 mile racing! I could be wrong on this, but I believe insurance for the tracks is cheaper when they run 1/8 mile. In this economy, that could be a factor as to why some of the tracks are running 1/8 mile more often. Just to throw another tidbit out there... My car uses 3/4 gallon of fuel per 1/4 mile pass, including driving to / from the trailer. 5 Gallons is usually enough for a day with 2 time shots and 6 or 7 elimination rounds. At the World Footbrake Challenge in Bristol, I made 32 passes that weekend, all 1/8 mile. I used just under 10 gallons of fuel all weekend. If that was 1/4 mile, I would have used around 25 gallons. If you do a lot of racing, that could be a significant cost savings... |

WE HAVE A WINNER. Jeff's post was dead-on.
Pittsburgh is too short for 1/4 mile racing. Chip Johnson |

I have been looking forward to this race all year until I heard it was 1/8 mile now I am not sure we are bringing our total 5 cars.If there is an issue with TS-TD stopping run them at an 1/8 why do that to the rest of us.I agree with wes 1/8 is better than nothing but when you can race 1/4 at least for the HR STK SS QR SR why not.Really took the Zing out of it for me.Why these guys keep tinkering with this stuff is beyond me the whole experience is changing.HEY IF IT AIN"T BROKE DON"T FIX IT!
