Not only did I eat with them but I cooked for them. It was one of the most awesome dinners I have had in my 41 years. I will post pics as we took plenty of them. And Jeff there is a book called the Ramchargers that is awesome and details alot of what they did. Tom Hoover who not only designed the Hemi he designed the first fuel injection Chrysler used in 1955.
They will be at Piedmont Dragway tomorrow for a Super Stock Reunion. |

What an awesome opportunity!
Did you ask them about the time they got caught with slicks full of water? Btw I met Herb Sr once and told him I was looking for a Max Wedge block and 4 months later I got a call from Larry Hill saying that he had a block for sale. It was nice for someone of his reputation to take the time to help out a nobody like me. Nice guy! JimR

Looking forward to pictures and any comments you care to pass on. That is awesome! I keep looking st that 49 plymouth sitting in the corner of one of our shops, that we were going to turn into a High and Mighty clone, and thinking we need to finish that thing one of these days... It was a good dinner that's for sure. I laughed at the story of the 67 funny car. They could never figure out how much boost they were running. Had a 35lb gauge in the car, but they never got a read on it. They kept putting people in the passenger seat in an attempt to read it while going down the track. They were unsuccessful as everyone was scared out of their mind. They were supposed to be running around 20lbs, the run before they blew the motor, they realized it had the gauge pegged at 35. They made 79 passes before it blew. Running 7.90's at 190+.
I want to know who was willing to sit in the passenger side of a 7 second car in 1967 in an attempt to read a boost gauge. These guys are all super nice and super intelligent. Most of them have forgot more than racers today will ever know. Their memories are rock solid. |

Mike & Herb, Jr.
Sorry we did not meet up with you guys yesterday. We saw your dad and grandson. It is always a good time when all of us old racers get together at Piedmont. There was alot of racing history visiting under the Ramcharger's tent, all day yesterday. |

I was there with my son and the Jr Dragster making two runs before going to Roxboro. We actually should have made one more as we broke the clutch on the last time run. We fixed it and made it to the Semi Finals before losing on a staging malfunction. The funny is Ted Spahr the father of the Motown Missle was there, we talked for 30 minutes and that guy is amazing with his knowledge and the stuff they did back 40 years ago. Just looking at that Jr Dragster you could see his "wheels turning" he referred to something they did in 63 on a road race project to the exhaust that he figured would make those cars run faster. My dad said back in 71-72 Ted made more power than anyone with a Hemi Pro Stocker but Chrysler paid them to run a Clutchflight instead of a 4 speed.
Its amazing the history these guys have. Herb Jr |

I think that that is very cool. To talk to and here all the stories they have is totaly a once in a life time opertunity. a few years back I became good friends with one of them(Dan Mancini) before he passed away. He brought a car to my shop to be rebuilt and we became good friends. He would stop in just about every day.
Well I hope that you had a great time. |
