Dan, I don't have a stocker. Have no desire to drive what I do have on the street.

It used to be a nine second NA street car that still got close to 20 mpg. :-)
LOL.....

YEAH remember it well, ran Pure Stock in 19(oh)73
Then the Blueprinted cams replaced that because of creative cheating.
Which is basically what we have today as Pure Stock..

But you make a point.
Heck the new Mustangs can run a 9 second ET and can get 20mpg.
Just need a Supercharger..

Dan

Impressive.
Just curious: What RPM did that 9 second N/A engine idle at ?

donc - thanks for your support! Will send you a PM.
How many tech guys really know HOW to check duration and overlap......LOL. Not only that but the tech specs on most newer cars do NOT even list duration and overlap specs or valve spring pressures.

Red Anderson made some slick tools for that. He was quite the machinist. He checked mine several times. Those Lunati and General Kinetics "cheater cams" we ran back then looked like the roller cams we run now: lobes were flat across the top. LOL

Take away the light pistons and we had present day "pure stock" engines, it sounds like.

I met Red when I first worked for the NHRA. It WAS a good organation back in the early 70's for those who are to young to know or remember. I still have my 2 piece degree wheel I got from Red for checking cams and a cpl. of other things. He was a sharp man. 2 other greats were Marty Barrett and Greg X. They were good to me and showed me a lot.

That two piece, adjustable degree wheel was a slick deal. His little magnetic based, folding pointer was neat too.
First time Red tore me down for a record (The new Dallas track in Lewisville) he wouldn't let Carroll Caudle watch him check the cam. Carroll had machined my block, and did the "trick" (at the time) valve job, and built a lot of engines. Carroll helped me take it apart. I think Red thought Carroll did the whole engine. Made him go stand about 50' away while he checked everything. LOL
Guess he didn't want Carroll figuring how to slip something by. Had me scared to death! LOL
I could have threaded a running sewing machine.
After that tear downs seemed a lot more informal. Red would actually joke around during checking it. Think some of it was to make me squirm. He got to be a friend.

I remember the McElroy Grind which got me bounced at Atlanta.

It was square topped to.

My Bullet Cam is mild in comparison yet requires Stock Spring pressures.
So you cannot go to wild.

We had to run stock spring pressure too. General Kinetics cam was my fastest. Spring eater. GM springs = two races. TRW springs = three races, sometimes four. My engine ('56 Chevy) was the 2-4bl 225 hp Corvette engine, solid lifters. The GK cam used .003" lash. Last pass of the day, check the lash before loading up to verify everything was up to temp.
