I ordered a 5 gallon aluminum tank with a sending unit so the original gauge can still work again. Question on the drivers barrier, my car is a hatchback Nova with a trap door where the spare tire used to be recessed about 4". If we cut the tank into the floor cover the bottom of the hole with sheet metal welded in, is the trap door in the floor considered a firewall barrier for the drivers compartment?

![]() The rule says the cell must be isolated from the driver's compartment. That usually is a wall of some sort, so ask your local tech before cutting anything. There are smart people here, but it's still just a forum. Techs can bounce you at the gate and "Class Racer told me it's OK" won't float. Dale

We can run a fuel cell, but cannot sump the oem tank?...Wait...What?

I run a 76 Nova Hatchback, I had a sheet metal box made and cut a hole in the the cover. the box is on a hinge in the rear and dzus fastners in the front. The fuel cell is mounted on brackets on the trunk floor. I used weather stripping to make sure there is a good seal all around the cover and the box.

Besides, why would you go through the trouble to modify a tank? Most are rusty inside and out....so...you need to buy a new one. Then all the work to hack it up? Cells are cheap and easy to install. Cells can be poly or aluminum. They can have any size or quantity of outlets and return ports. They come in many shapes and gallon sizes. They can be installed with the built in sump protruding through the floor. They are simply a win-win item. Not to mention there is no fuel spilling out the fill neck on a hard launch and no need to carry 15 gallons to ensure the pickup tube stays covered. Who remembers seeing hard leaving cars pour fuel out on a launch? Just remember: The cell must have a ground strap from one of the fuel cap mounting screws down to the body or frame. If your original tank was part of the floor, you must close the floor with metal. The area directly behind the rear seat must be sealed with a sheet of metal or aluminum (for cars with an actual trunk). If you have a hatchback style car, the cell must be sealed in a box or a trunk like area must be built for the tank to be inside of. Just think of it this way, the cell must be in a sealed compartment and the driver must be separate of that sealed compartment. |

Bob, you are almost right. The requirement for the grounding wire from the filler to the car does not apply to aluminium tanks.

In D5 it does. As I had to install a ground wire on my aluminum cell. The point the tech made was there is a gasket between the filler and the cell. It was not worth arguing about, so I installed a ground on the cell. Although the bolt that secures the filler to the cell contacts the cell and filler, and my cell is bolted directly to the floor of the car. Sean
