Ray, nothing yet. Have follow racers looking out for it in a lot of surrounding states. Lucky no car inside but a blue 10x20 Ez-Up with Donato Racing

Do an eBay search for Coban GPS Tracker TK303. No monthly fee. Get a SIM Card. I use one from T-Mobile. When you call the tracker, it sends you a text with a link to google maps

I read that the Apple Airtag is only good for a short distance? Is this true?

It depends on what you are talking about. In short the answer it is not true. You can track them for hundreds/thousands of miles. All it takes is someone coming "near" it (like passing in another lane) that has an Apple device with the Bluetooth active.

This creates a series of pings that will give you or the authorities an idea of the location and direction. The random Apple devices are not linked to the Airtag nor do they know they are sending a signal to the cloud. It just happens almost Bigbrother like, but it is pretty handy for a one time $25 fee an no annual fee for each one.
