Those two friends had to race each other as I never saw either loose a street race to anyone other than each other in the summer of 1968. The GTO's, 442's, Hemi and 440 GTX, and even a few street strip cars went down to those Chevelle's in 1968 in north Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and part of Kansas. We traveled a lot of miles and street raced in a lot of places in the summer of 1968. No matter how fast they were in 68 they were no longer king in 1969 and replaced by some newer cars. Things change quickly and one of the friends was married following the summer of 68 and sold his car. The other friend kept his for many years and I am not sure what ever happened to his car. I ran into him a few years ago and he told me he did not have the Chevelle any more and did not say where it went. The late 60's were a fun time for me when gas was cheap and all the muscle cars were around. My 2 Cents Rick Cates |

Had a friend when I was in high school, 3 years older than me, with a brand new 66 Chevy Caprice with a 427/425 4 speed. I didn't know it at the time but that had to be a very rare car. His dad was the front end man at the local chevy dealer.

Moose,
I had to make a small correction. The 1968 Chevelle SS 396 (375 HP) was classed in B/S for 1969. Jim LeRoux ran a 12.73 @ 111 MPH in the 1968 Hemi Road Runner. Pretty much a basic stock Street-Hemi, with 4.56 gears, headers, a little transmission work and 10" slicks. The 1968 Chevelle SS 396, B/Stock,,,,had some goodies too. ...and ran a very close 12.85 @ 111 MPH. Note: Jim took it easy on the 68' Chevelle SS,,,,,,,,,as the 68' Hemi Road Runner was capable of running 12.10's @ 118 MPH. pc Last edited by Paul Ceasrine; 08-20-2011 at 11:50 AM. |

Paul C, I guess all you have to do now is find a old photo of a real 427 Chevelle going up against a 426 Hemi car, now that will be a good one.

Might be several out there. I raced Carrol Fink's hemi at the 1974 division 3 indy points meet. I'll have to think alittle if any others. I do know where a photo of my black copo chevelle racing a nito 9 mustang. Might be a few pictures at local Pittsburg tracks of this car in 1973 and 1974
