Moose,
1968 426 Hemi Road Runner In the other post, it ran 13.20's. I think SS & DI called it the fastest 1968 car they had tested. |

I knew it would be a close one...but I'd really like to see the '68 Hemi Road Runner, '68 Hemi Charger R/T, '68 396 Copo Nova, '68 428 Cobra Jet Fairlane, '68 440 GTX and '68 Hemi GTX all battle it out on here...I can smell the tire smoke already.

Danny, yes I've seen those cars from Fast...their rules are very different.
Some of the other big block muscle cars mentioned in this thread, '68 440 & Hemi Coronet R/T & Superbee's, '68 428 Cobra Jet Cougar...also can't forget about some of the mid-size and small block pony cars posted on here as well...I wonder who had the fastest small block car in '68. |

![]() ![]() Quote - Here is Martyn at the strip with a press pool '68 GTO running in the D/Stock Auto class. Note the manufacturer's license plates of the day that start with the letters GM. Martyn noted that the GM lawyers didn't take to kindly to Cars magazine's printing photos of GM cars with their tags at the strip. Remember these were the days of high insurance premiums for high performance cars and all manufacturers were beginning to downplay their roles in drag racing. |

As far as the fastest smallblock in '68, I'm wondering if it was a 340 powered Mopar, maybe Colletti, as I can't think of any 350 GM cars that jumped out of the magazines back then, although Dave Strickler's Z/28 was no slouch, even though it was a 302. I'm sure someone will chime in with some figures from '68. Danny Durham |

In 1968 for Stock Class,,,,,,,
The Fastest Small-Blocks,,,,,,,, No doubt the Wenzil Brothers out of Merril, Michigan with their 67' 302 Z-28 Camaro in C/Stock, was the fastest 4-speed. Running 12.30's'. The 68' 302 Z-28 Camaro (heavier car) was classed in D/Stock. Elapsed times were 12.45's. On the other transmission side, Mark Coletti in the 68' 340 Barracuda 'Fastback' running in E/SA was the quickest automatic.. Running 12.75's. Also, Jimmy Boyd who ran a 68' 340 Barracuda 'Notchback' in D/SA was actually quicker, but lesser known than the Coletti's. Running 12.55's. Last edited by Paul Ceasrine; 04-13-2012 at 04:07 PM. |
