Step 1)
Drop each class one full second. Almost all S/C dragsters can run 7.90, almost all S/G cars can run 8.90. (some S/St cars may be out of luck with 9.90 though). Step 2) Take away computerized throttle stops. To hit the indexes, tune each vehicle's performance with A) timing; B) weight; C) shift points; D) mechanical throttle stops - adjustable bolt under the throttle pedal; or E) restrictor plates. But no timers of any sort. Not throttle stop timers, nitrous timers, or even shift timers. The top end stop idea isn't really workable. I am on the stop 3.0 seconds. If I could only use a top end stop I think I'd be off the throttle within 5.0 seconds (1/8th mile) coasting for the next 4.9 seconds. Surely that's even a worse show than you get now? Or maybe NHRA Unleashed replaces stock/superstock/supergas/superstreet and replaces it with true no-electronics index racing from 8.50 - 13.00. (that would never happen, right? Or could it......) |

Chebby 2 we don't have all the answers, this is the reason for this post. I promise to sit through a complete round of S/G and S/C at Indy this year. I'll let you know if I could go through a second one.CR

Look at it this way it will still be a finish line driving fest for the win most of the time. If you have t/s or not, big mph or not. If you do away with the t/s you will still have cars (holding a pretty good amount) and still getting rid of it at the finish line or before. Look at s/ss qualifying ,most of that is 1,000 ft racing, How do you think the fans like that. They probably ask questions such as why do these cars seem to shut off or run out of fuel before they can get to the 1/4 mile. Maybe thats why a lot of fans don't watch them as well. It just ain't like it used to be and never will . Ok ,give me HE!! for this post ,but it is true in my eyes.

I can't disagree with you about S/SS one of problem class have to watch out for. Last year at Indy nearly everyone was shutting off at the 1000' nobody wants to show their hands. I would be back in Super Gas in two second if you took the advantage that Timer, big motor and throttle stops were banned. When you can spend close to 35k and more for just a motor you have a problem. I do not want to turn back to the past but we are at a cross road, can you afford to compete if you're out spent. Ed De Staute was the last winner with a no timer with his Corvette, not many since. maybe leave Super Gas and Super Comp the way it is but control S/ST for an entry level. CR

Piedmont Dragway has a class they one twice a month on Thursday nights that is 7.49 index 1/8 mile, no stops, no transbrakes, no anything, five tenths pro tree no deep staging. This class has between 15 and 25 cars on a THURSDAY night. The attendance is up on these nights when this class runs. Its side by side racing and even going that slow the fans enjoy it. When we were there myself and our other announcer made these guys into local hero's and it was all enjoyed.
Herb Jr To answer the question, no stops, and make it no delay boxes as well if you want to put the driver back in the seat. |
