It's the stand the NHRA has to take. The reason that the NHRA was formed. It's a shame but the NHRA TV coverage is terrible, so is the product. Id watch a whole season of this before I watch any pro coverage. I'm sure I'm not alone in this opinion, maybe not on this site but with car people my age. It seems everybody on Facebook that comments about this is pro SO, and anti NHRA. The Suits that run the NHRA should use this as a wake up call. Shake things up and come up with some programs, or ideas that can breed some exposure into the homes of the people watching these shows.
The SO show is pretty good to watch. There are different styles of cars, drivers with personalities, a bit of drama with passion. The cars are cool, and have technology in them. The drivers are guys the common folk can sort of relate to. Unlike any pro racer today. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for both parties. If I'm the NHRA Id figure out a way to hold my ground, and make a deal with these guys. Pay them to make some appearances at some races, with TV coverage. If 2.2 million more started watching, it would be a good thing. |

In this case, though, I think that they did the right thing. Some of those are known guys, and the cars are real. They had to do something. Everyone's bashing NHRA. Maybe they should be bashing the guys doing the show. Talk about money. Nobody on that show would care if it was cancelled if they didn't stand to lose money from the deal. Maybe a lot of money. Instead, they place the blame on NHRA for their own decisions. I'm not surprised one bit. That's the way it goes today. Blame the people enforcing the rules instead of the person breaking them. |

My point: The Sanctioning bodies have a opportunity to capitalize on this ! Put on a Street Racing program that was as interesting as PINKS.. Do not know why PINKS stopped. Sure had my attention. IHRA and NHRA need to get out of the box of the sanctioned professional and amateur and deal with the serious issue of Street Racing. One of the major prejudices are allowing foreign makes to race with US built cars. Hell that alone in Stock would double the ranks. Provide a venue and intrigue. If it were me I know what I would do. One interesting point...
I remember Georgia 400 getting built back in the 70's Deliverance and Smokey and the Bandit were filmed in that area. Burt Reynolds used a lot of that road before it was completed for his street racing themes in the Bandit series. Street Outlaws, Fast and Furious, Bullet were all about competition and the baddest ***** cars and crazy souls going after it. I get the feeling more people were watching Street Outlaws than were going to NHRA Meets. I think Pro Stock has run its course and why Mountain Motor and other venues are run by the street guys. Street Outlaws have a small tire and large tire cars racing. Lot of that comes from the Radial Tire limitation races. I think if you have the racers put on a venue advertise in national and local newspapers their followers will come. Intrigue !! Mystery !! NHRA and IHRA trying and run as many cars through in an hour as possible. I remember the days of rosin prepped tracks. The pace slowed down. The build up. The smack talk. Offside betting. Everyone was lined up to see those races. Features that made PINKS exciting. How many times you see the Fans line up to watch Pro Stock like that ? Just saying D |

Todd, i agree with everything you said, nhra really needs to try and find a way to make this work for them instead of alienating and threatening people, i do believe they are really pissed about themselves looking stupid compared to " a bunch of yahoo street racers", somebody is making money and it aint them, did anyone notice how many guys are wearing msd and other manufacturers tee shirts now, want to bet someones getting paid to do that ??? whats next nhra throws out any sponsors that are shown on SO??

I see a lot of speculation on the deaths caused by "Street Racing" and what type of "Street Racing" would that be drag racing, Formula 1, salt flats, dune buggies.........
We all sound like the uneducated masses that call any type of street race a drag race.......... Just for the record I wonder how many people are killed each year due to driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs???????????????? If safety and saving lives is the issue, well.............. Bob

Left out cell phones, boom boom stereos, and tires with large and small diameters with off sets that stress suspension components, add on TV sets in vehicles, digital everything on the dash that causes you to take your eyes off the road to navigate thru menus, etc.

For at least 8 years i have watched street racing on You tube. There are cars from time to time have NHRA/IHRA #'s on the cars. Nothing was said. If you count the hits for these videos, there is certainly a large interest in drag racing. Everything on the Discovery Channel is staged in some manner, regardless of the format. These are all shows for entertainment. Entertainment is for $$$$$. A bunch of racers got noticed and became popular. I think that we all wished that it would happen to us. If Wally would have sanctioned street racers from the 60's, I doubt if NHRA would have gotten very far.Let them race and let NHRA offer an alternative to street racing at the end of the show...".it's safe and legal and fun and anyone one can do it with any car. That's how you win. Build the sport.
