Coil for a MSD 7AL-2
Are there any coils out there for a 7AL-2 that will do the job? MSD 8261 is over $200. According to MSD a lot of coils won't work as well with a 7 series MSD.

Re: Coil for a MSD 7AL-2
My old coil died. Just put an 8201 in the car and it runs like it should. I have a 7AL2 in the car.

Re: Coil for a MSD 7AL-2
After looking at the 8201 went in the garage to check on some coils I have and sure enough I already have an 8201. Will check it out and see if it is still good. Started working on my Max Wedge last summer after being stored since 1993. Hope the 8201 is still good, as saving any money is nice.

Re: Coil for a MSD 7AL-2
I have used the MSD 8201 with 7ALs for years with no problems.

Re: Coil for a MSD 7AL-2
MSD recommends the 8261 coil with the 7AL-2 box, ( the big one ). But I'm sure you will find several racers that have used the 8201 ( the small one ) with no differences, myself included.

Re: Coil for a MSD 7AL-2
8261 is recommended for short spurts like in Comp Eliminator otherwise it gets too hot and becomes not as effective ---8251 is just slightly less on output than a 8261 recommended in most cases where the engine is run for longer periods of time such as in Stock/Super Stock---8201 coil is a good coil nothing wrong with it but if you want to get maximum efficiency from the ignition system I would look at the 8261/8251 as opposed to a 8201--FED 387

Re: Coil for a MSD 7AL-2
As FED387 pointed out the MSD 8251 is an excellent choice for use with MSD 7, 8, and 10 ignition boxes. This coil runs cool and is the same price as the 8201. I have one on my pro-street SBC and it runs for hours without overheating!
