I don't know of any written or unwritten rule as to who has the right of way, but I know that I won't turn off or go into another guy's lane unless I see him and basically made eye contact with him. I'm not one of the fastest cars usually, but I almost always take it to the sand trap, even if I do need to get back on the gas (my local track has a 3500 ft. shutdown, and I routinely need to get back on the gas there). I just figure that it is safer than taking one of the earlier turnoffs (by taking an earlier turnoffs you also have the possibility of getting clipped by somebody already coming down the return road).

Anyway, sorry to hear about your misfortune Steve and thanks for clearing the air.

Just be careful out there everyone...

I was in the right lane and both of us intended to turn left off the track. I was way in front of him and looked back and could not see him. I figured he took earlier turnoff or was behind me so turned off going very slow all the while looking . I saw him coming after I got broad side in the track and gased it to get out of his way and he hit me in the rear quarter panel behind the back tire going about 40-50 mph. He wound up in the center of his lane and I was in the guard rail next to the turn off. I could not see him and he must not have seen me although he was behind me the whole time somewhere. There was no fight and I spoke to him before I left. I have the misfurtune of being out front a lot as my car is fast for Super rod and have this predictament most every run. I dont understand why it went down like that but it did and I turned across the track like I did every run if I was in the right lane. You cannot take any thing for granted. I wish I had went to the sand trap and turned off but I would have had to get back on the gas to get there racing 1/8th mile on 1/4 mile track.

Sorry to hear about the carnage Steve, but happy to hear nobody got hurt.

boy we was talking about this over the weekend, if the return road is on the left side, who has the right away and like Steve was saying, your looking, looking, and them if you take the chance to turn left (if your in the right lane) and what if the other driver bogged or just got plan pissed and is beating his car all the way down pass the shut down, is this something both NHRA & IHRA and even the Saturday night Sunday racing tracks should think about putting someone down at the end when fast cars are running?
Now this gives you something to thinking about next time you turn across the lanes and not seen your opponent yet.

Thanks Steve.

This is an interesting topic. I had a similar thing happen to me at Pittsburgh. Although thanks to me locking up my brakes at 50 mph, there was no collision (not sure my tires were happy...). I don't think the other guy even knew it happened. I just chalked it up to "stuff happens"...

Glad to hear no one was hurt in this one. I am usually the slower car so I have the advantage of being in behind most of the time.

I believe there should only be ONE turnoff...period.

I never cross the center line infront of another car, even if I have to sit there dead stopped. There are too many incidents like this. I f i am the car that will be crossed in front of i will always slow down enough to show the other driver I am going behind him in the shut down area.

I've always been under the impression that you are to allow the car that's in the lane of the turn off to go ahead of you. I realize sometimes this is not practical as in some catagories there is a big difference in E.T. and MPH. As with so many things the final decision rests on our shoulders, my new car has side view mirrors which really help in spotting the other guy, they really help in seeing where the other car is. Joe As a side note I would see it as my responsibility if I'm the car behind to allow room for the lead car to turn off obviously I would be able to see them the entire time.
