Yes, they can be too restrictive. There's also the type of media used, and the design, as it relates to integrity. There have been problems with internal failures.
Look up Lake Speed Jr., he just did an oil filter article. He's pretty good.

I have been using system one for about 20 years. In my opinion best thing out there. Never use a cheap automotive filter on your race engine.

They have several different filter elements with different micron ratings. I would guess mine is the least restrictive. good long lasting product. Very easy to clean and inspect.
