I ran into the same problem a few years ago with a car I bought. I had a Strange 40 spline 3rd member with a slightly diff. gear ratio that I wanted to use. Ended up swaping the spools. Later replaced the Strange 4 spline with a Motive Gear 40 spline spool. Seems all the 40 spline spools an axels have the same pitch/size spline.

don't panic strange makes a spool with thru splines , they go all the way across, and will work with the m/w axles just call them. they will probobly swap it for you if it's new. they are great to deal with . just give them a call. i always order all my third members with this spool.it keeps the axles shorter to save a little weight.
