I think you're right. The photo is from mid-1969. The Jerry McClure Barracuda does have the exact same paint scheme as Wiley Cossey's car. (see post #518). Light blue rocker panel section, thin dark red body side stripe sections, white body-center, and dark red hood, roof and trunk stripe. Wiley Cossey sold his SS/B car in early-1969. The other Barracuda, with the primered door section and primered quarter-panel section, looks to be Don Carlton's ex 'Lil Thumper' car,,,which was painted light-blue. Stewart,
The Carlton Cuda was damaged in a towing accident - bought by S&M and Carlton was hired to drive for them. This was Don's break into the big time. The car was repaired with a 69 front end (S&M also did this in 69- not sure how they got away with this in S/S though - Landy did it too) Well Carlton's car was painted in S&M colors and in early 70 S&M ran 2-68 cars and while they were sorting out the 70 P/S car - if you ever see pit shots from Pomona 70 you will see all three cars. I think when Don left S&M was when Herb McCandless was hired full-time. Don drove a RR in 69, the 68 Cuda and If I am not mistaken also the Duster that Herb McCandless later drove in P/S (70). BTW the other Cuda in the S&M shop is NOT the Cossey car. S&M only had one Superbird - the car in the background was a customer car - and a Daytona - if I am not mistaken a Disc Jockey in SC raced the car -Chuck Neeley I belive. Mark J |

1968 Sox & Martin Hemi Barracuda paint scheme had the white hood, with blue center stripe (with Lil Boss on the fenders)...Their 1969 Hemi Barracuda paint scheme had a blue hood and white center stripe, (with Lil Boss on the hood scoop)...Also another later shot of their 68 Hemi Barracuda with polished super tricks on it...Hmm, I wonder who's car that was originally, anyone know.

Paul C, I think you're right about that primered 68 Hemi Barracuda in the other Sox & Martin shop photo being the ex-Don Carlton "Lil Thumper"...I also confirmed the decals located on the drivers side vent window with some other older pictures of it.
Notice the 68 Hemi Barracuda in the middle of the shop, that is the ex-Dave Wren B029 Hemi Barracuda, he must have had a couple of different paint jobs on it before he sold it. ![]() So how many B029 1968 Hemi Barracuda's did Sox & Martin own back then, or buy off other racers and just resell them to other customers. ![]() Last edited by Hemi Moose; 09-13-2011 at 02:00 AM. |

Did all of these cars get the full S&M treatment or were they simply passed along? |

Dan,
Most of the other BO29 Hemi Barracuda's were purchased in 1969 by Sox & Martin. Dean Nicopolis SS/BA car was featured in the December 1969 Speed and Supecar Magazine (photo session from September 69'), when Dean had it. I think Sox & Martin got it in February 1970. On selling prepared cars, I think the deal was, they put the car together, and guaranteed it would run 10.50's. They would deliver the car to your local drag strip of choice, then Ronnie Sox would take it down the track with a 10.50 guarantee. After that, hand over $10,000, and it was all yours. All the cars had variations red/white/blue paint scheme. Last edited by Paul Ceasrine; 09-13-2011 at 03:23 PM. |
