Here is a pic when it was known as the Poison Dart. I believe this is the paint scheme I will put back on it, though I am saving the "Dodge In Motion" on the C-pillars for posterity...

Yes I purchased it from Reed, but no progress yet, been busy collecting parts. Found a 66 Hemi and a Hustle Stuff slick-shifted 4-speed this year, now it is time to start working on it this winter!

Thank you sir.
Not many pro catagory racers came from the Razorback state and I have not seen that one since back when it was new.(Once at Carlisle Dragway, Ark)
Someone on here stated it is still alive and well and in Kansas I believe.
Still amazes me how many of these made it through the years.
Again, thanks for the memory.

The photo series with Rich Thomas and Preston Honea appear to be taken at Pacific, Missouri. At the time it was the largest track in the St Louis area.

After reading this great thread, I still have a question that I haven't seen answered.

Has there ever been a statement as to why the Darts were hardtops and not post sedans? It's just something I was curious about. I suppose Mopar was trying to market the Scat Pack and Rapid Transit System (which were all hardtops) but that didn't bother them with the A990 cars.

FWIW It's been stated in the past in several publications that Dodge did use the hardtop since they were interested in promoting/selling the more expensive hardtops, GTs, GTS, etc. with the exposure they would get with their 68 drag racing program. So you're correct.

1968 Super/Stock Magazine Nationals
@ New York National Speedway
July 19, 20 & 21

* 64 Cars were entered in for the Super/Stock Eliminator.

The rules, you could run on your own dial-in, or use the National Record as your index.
If you ran under your dial-in, you were DQ'd.

Super Stock Eliminator Finals

Bill Stiles (SS/BA) 68' Hemi Barracuda
vs.
Dick Arons (SS/F) 68' SS396 (396/325 HP) Camaro convertible

Records at the time;

SS/BA,,,,, (11.07),,, Chuck Ostrich,,,1968 Hemi Barracuda
An 'on purpose soft' record, as most of the 68' SS/BA Hemi cars were running
2/10's under the record at the time.
Even the NHRA instituted a 10.90 minimum for the SS/BA class index.

SS/F,,,,,,,,(11.93),,,,,Dave Strickler,,,1968 Z-28 Camaro (302/290 HP)
SS/F,,,,,,,,(11.93),,,,,Sox & Martin,,,,,1967 GTX (440/375HP)

Results; Bill Stiles won the race over Dick Arons, but Stiles broke-out by
running a 10.69 on his 10.75 dial-in.
While Dick Arons ran an 11.69 on a 11.63 dial-in.
Dick Arons won by way of disqualification.
