It looks like Herb taped a rug to the roll cage in the above photo...anyway here's a few more shots of Herb McCandless '65 A990 Belvedere.

Not certain who owned this car or if it was a genuine A990 package car or not but odds are good that it was since it has a single headlight grille and Match Race Madness was sudenly big business in 1965.
Anybody know anything about this car? ![]() |

The original "Hemi Countdown." Grandpa (Harry Holton) bought it new from a dealership in Reno, NV in 1965. Bought it back in '91 and raced it until the end of '95. Car is currently owned by Mark Vieira.
These pictures are dated 1/22/66 and were taken at Kingdon Dragway in Lodi, CA. This is a different car than the one I posted about on pp. 15-16 of this thread.

"Hemi Countdown" as I remember it. This picture is from 1992.
I was 10... Looks like there's a '68 car in the waterbox in the background, but it's not one I recognize.

This almost looks like it could be either the old Mr Tomato or The Funny Car A/FX'ers...both front & rear wheelwells were cut very crudely then someone spray-bombed it orange.

Post Mr Tomato is very probable since the plate on the front bumper crudely reads "Texas Badman" and the Mr Tomato car had very close ties to the "Kansas Badman" Ted Detar back in the day. Notice how far the HEMI has been set back into the firewall and also how the rear 1/4 window posts of been removed for weight savings?
