I am almost certain that Dave Hughes was the first A/MP car in the 8s with his '58 Corvette. I seem to remember National Dragster making mention of it during coverage of Indy one year. Not sure if Dave was the last record holder, but I know he held it on numerous occasions.

As many of you know, I don't get on this blog very often but like the rest of us I'm not doing much to keep busy during this Covid-19 shut down and I saw this very old question that I can offer an answer to.
In the Nov. 5, 1982 ND on the National record holders page 48 the A/MP record was listed as 9.19 @ 150.00 mph set on 3-82 at Baton Rouge by Shioleno-Coleman-Alexander-Wise-Hadley '81 Chevy. All modified cars were made part of Competition Eliminator for the '82 season. I'll include the remainder FYI and enjoyment. BMP 9.67, C 9.60, D 9.76, E 9.92, ASM 9.81, BSM 9.75, CSM 9.85. Two of my "old" friends had their cars for sale (with pictures) Paul Mercure's '67 Camaro (18K) that he had just won the world finals with and Charlie & Jeff Taylor,s J/SA '69 Camaro convertible (9.8K) and their ramp truck. I was listed as the SS/JA record holder @ 10.79 Norwin Palmer was crowned the Competition Eliminator World Champ, Tex Miller champ in stock, Keith Lynch Super Stock. I was third behind Dan Dalrymple and 78 points ahead of Sonny Ray. |
