I checked with NHRA and they said it was legal on the 230 HP 302 in the 1968 Cougar. It came with the same size Holley as the 390 so it is legal. I also found out I can't run the hood unless the engine has ram air.

I think the acceptable Quick Fuel carb is the SSR-585-VS.

The replacement carb for the Holley on the 390 is SSR-780-VS. The Holley on the 230 hp 1968 Cougar is the same size as the 390 Holley so it is a legal replacement according to the email I got from NHRA.

An email from NHRA should be enough documentation to get you by..... just seems odd that the same size carb is approved for use on displacements from 302 to 428 cu. In.

The bold sizes, straight from my Holley book are for a "600" cfm carb. The "780" was used on the 335 HP 428 ci in the Mustang, Fairlane & Cougar. The last update in that year was #16 for an ALT Manifold. ![]()

Rusty -
Defintiely get that cleared up from NHRA Tech Department. Reading the tech specs and the carb list in the approved products document, it is clear to me that the carb is a ~600 cfm Holley, not a ~780 cfm. The footnote on the 1968 Ford Tech Bulletin says the carb spec is 1.563"x1.563" throttle bores and 1.250"x1.313" venturis and the same specs are listed for a 390. There is no 780 size carb listed for a 390 in 1968. The 1966 and 1967 390 GT engines are allowed the 780 carb as a replacement, but not any other years. When you ask for clarification from NHRA, note to them that the Approved Products document has a note beside the Quick Fuel SSR-585-VS carb that says it replaces the Holley 3245 and 3806 carbs, neither of which is listed in the Tech Specs for the 1968 Ford 302-230hp engine. While the original carb has the same throttle bore and venturi dimensions, their technical document does not specifically state that the QF carb is a legal replacement. That needs to be verified.
