Ok here is the story I sold my 86 ss firebird that is raced for 17 years in Ss and gt many different engines 283 305 350.Thought I was done than less than two months later I came across a you guessed it a 86 firebird all stock with a worn out 2.8 v6. The rest of the car is in good shape for $250 so yea I bought it lol now here is my question has anyone tried running this combinations with a stick and what class will it run? Any thoughts on this thanks steve

Go here: www.classracerinfo.com for all the tech info and classification information. Looks like it will run T - U - V
Joe Moore, Bill Drevo and other have run that basic engine in FWD applications in years past in carbureted form. I do not know if anyone has run the FI engine. The '86 has very good flowing heads, lots of compression and there should be a plentiful supply of cheap cores for everthing. Somebody has gotten Ross pistons approved for it, so it must have some potential.

There was/is a fellow from Georgia, Norm Griffiths?, that ran one. It was a carbureted 82-3-4 and it was an absolute killer in V with an automatic. I can only imagine that it would be better with a stick.
The early injected 2.8s in RWD were not all that good. They didn't have the high port heads that the FWD cars had. While we're on the RWD, V6 cars, I always thought that the 91 Firebird with the 3.1 would be a good combo. It has all of the better FWD stuff on it and is rated 5 HP less than the 2.8 and they're all T-U-V cars.

And an '86 can be made into a '91 with the swing of the magic wand . . .

Well if you want to run SS then look up an 87 305/205/235. THAT is one bad SS car! And as I recall, it's stick only. It makes SS/K-L-M as a base car or a Formula and gets into SS/N as a Trans-Am.

Yes Steve I tried to quit also but just can't seem to shake this habit! Hard to believe it's been 25 years since I bought your old Camaro. I met the guy you purchased the car from in Topeka last year. He could not believe it still existed!
I still have some old parts around here from that 277" motor you had in the car if you wan't to run old school modified!! |

Hey Jim yes it's hard to believe it's been that long and to think I was trying to stop back then I think that the only thing I'm going to give up for now on is the idea that I will stop racing lol I don't think I better try the 277 again trying to do this on a budget. I think I can do the v6 with stocker style suspension small tires and a stick. Maybe I'm crazy but it does sound fun
