I thought I would chime in and give our recent tire episodes: '01 30' Tri axle Pace bought new. 15" OEM Goodyears lasted 3 seasons, 2nd set about same. Started losing tires via separating tread about 2010. Did not matter whose Chinese Trailer Tire it was. We were killing at least 1 tire per trip. Same trailer, car, payload since new. In August '16 I finally got smart, went to GY Wrangler HT 225/75 16" Light Truck tire, load range "E".It was tough buying 7 wheels and tires but it solved our problem. We travel 10K plus a year, tires look great, and since have installed same setup on my Trailer Toad and companion trailer we use. That's 15 tires and wheels in last few months, but NO blowouts, etc. Rick Pennington GT/P #2022

I own a 40' TPD trailer with 3 axles and living quarters.
When I replaced the tires, I installed General Grabber HTS 60, LT235/85R16 tires, E load range. The tires are rated at 3,085 lbs load per tire and made in the USA. The trailer rides very smooth with a full load with no problems. Although trailer tires have stiffer walls, a trailer tire is not designed for turning; just to drive straight. The walls on LT tires are designed for turning, therefore, more compliant on the road. One of the best LT tires you can run in a trailer is the Michelin XPS Rib Truck radial. The Michelin tire has four heavy steel ply tread and one heavy steel sidewall ply, making it 10 ply rating. Therefore, it flexes less, stronger, less heat, and with the full steel casing is similar to a commercial tire. |

I think it's odd that in 32 posts about trailer tire problems that a Tire Pressure Monitoring System was not mentioned. The majority of tire problems (outside of belt separation) originate because of low tire pressure. If you have any questions about Tire Pressure Monitoring System or interested in purchasing one let me know. I have not blown a tire since I started using a monitoring system about 10 years ago. I've had several tires go bad but because of the monitoring system I knew there was a problem before a blow out.
After spending thousands of dollars on the "best" trailer tires over the last 18 years here is what I currently am doing on my triple axle stacker trailer...I bought the cheapest tires I could find from Discount Tire along with their lifetime warranty. I carry two spares. I believe the warranty was $17.50 per tire so when one goes bad supposedly they'll replace it at no charge. I've only had two go bad since I purchased them and they replaced both under warranty. Time will tell how their warranty is.

I just ordered a set of Goodyear Endurance 235/80/16" for my trailer and they came to $163.00 per tire mounted and balanced.
My local dealer does not have much experience with the Endurance ST tires as he usually recommends going to a LT tire. I get them put on Wednesday, so I am anxious to see how they handle compared to my 8 year old Goodyear Marathons. We use my car trailer to go to Sturgis every year and I want to avoid tire trouble in dealing with the heat and traffic going out there in August.

I am a fleet manager for a City fleet of about 250 vehicles and pieces of equipment. We have about 25 trailers and for the most part they never leave the City. We have been using the Goodyear Marathons and they worked for us but were a really soft in the sidewall tire. The Goodyear Endurance is all around much beefier and especially the sidewalls.
I have a 24' enclosed trailer that I put tires on a couple years ago that were China made. While not a fan at the time they were the best I could find. Westlake is the brand. I wish the Endurance was an option then as that is what I would have. Going to the 16" LT tires is the pretty much bullet proof solution used by people I know that tow alot. Failure rate to virtually zero. |
