I don't see that requirement in the rule book in stock or general rules. I see where it must be welded. And I don't remember anywhere on the tech card for that. I have had the weld looked at on mine but never asked about an sfi number. Perhaps a different steering wheel would be easier to find a quick disconnect for.

My Grant certainly isnt welded...it's inner spline is simply held in place by the factory nut. I don't see it being any less safe than the standard factory setup on these older vehicles.

Rich, sometimes these rules are so darned hard to interpret, I did e-mail NHRA tech concerning this and was told the factory column with the adapter bolted on IS indeed legal for competition.

Oh and I really need to get me one of them '67 Camaros!

If my partner ever decides to sell I'll give you a shout...I'm sticking with the El Camino myself.

I solved all my wheel problems on the Camino by installing swing-out bars and a factory tilt column.

General regulations require it be welded. Whoever replied to your email must have only looked in the "Stock" section of the rule. I got caught on it is how I know. I got mine from Summit and don't think it moved the wheel at all.

If that is the actual case and was called on it I would just go with the swing-out bar myself...makes all the difference in the world getting in and out of many of these cars. Those high side bolsters on the aluminum seats compound the problem.
