We had planned to fly to Miami or Lauderdale.....would we miss anything of importance if we use KW as our "base" for the week?

Like missing the Gators? I think you might want to split your time between KW and some where more central. If you use KW as your base, then because your at the bottom of Fla., you would be putting the miles on to see anything else.

We have decided to move the Keys trip to the opposite end of the calendar when rates are considerably lower....might be able to give the Gators some respect after all.

Dave, as stated above, trying to utilize the Keys as anything resembling a "base" to see Florida would be tough. The traffic on The Overseas Highway - U.S.Route 1 is horrible (it's mainly a 2 lane - 1 each direction) road and you guys would waste alot of time sitting in line. Not a good vacation, imo.
I would recommend staying somewhere on the mainland and perhaps a 1 or 2 night stay down in the Keys if you think that might work.

My use of the term “base” may have been misleading - our trip will focus exclusively on the Keys region.
