I never knew how close it was until we go the video. From the starting line I didn't think he caught you and thought we were out. Dad told me it was close but he didn't get around you. We had a hard time at that meet. The car got rammed by a 4 wheeler with two fat girls on it. I had to beat the quarter panel out with a brass hammer. Dad wore a hole in his shifter glove and then his hand. hahah He had the old top loader with an H-pattern shifter in the car back then. Then on the way home we lost a tire on the open trailer and tore the other quarter panel up with the fender from the trailer. I had to repaint the whole car after that!

Very cool video! I can`t imagine that any NHRA dragstrips still have a grass strip between the lanes anymore. (or steel Armco guardrails). I imagine things could get ugly pretty quickly if a car got loose at 130 MPH and crossed a grass "centerline"!

I had never been to a track with grass in the center. Still haven't. I was really surprised when we got there. I wonder if it is still like that today?

The track was replaced by a high school back in the 90ties. Thankfully Ed Swearingen built the Reynolds, Ga track about that time to fill the void. The dirt in the center of the track was sometimes good for entertainment, if a car go into the dirt there was always a really big cloud of dust for while.
Warner Robbins hosted NHRA Divisionals from 1967 thru 1990 or so. Jimmy Parker |
