But I don't know of a single car that ran SS, in '69. John Angeles had a '69 SS Bird that is said to have been the 1st Pontiac 400 powered reg SS Pontiac to break into the 9's, back in 2000. John's daughter Keri was driving it. But I doubt John was racing it in '69, especially not in SS. Would probably have had to be a Pontiac dealer sponsored car. There were some dealers racing Stockers back then. But I don't know of any who raced a new '69 Pontiac, in '69, in SS. I have pics of 2 possibilities. But, I don't know what year they began racing in SS. One had "Strong" on the door & was marked SS/F. The other was Phil Monteith's '69 RAIV "Hatari" Bird, marked SS/FA. I've seem it marked with a stock class designation. So, I don't know that he ran SS, in '69. Am posting a pic of the "Chief Justice" SS/G '69 Judge. It's a small tire Super Stocker. But again, don't know when it began racing SS. The "Packin Poncho" was a '69 RAIV SS Judge. I think it ran in AHRA & IHRA events, mostly, since it had an aftermarket hoop scoop. We saw it run back in around '75 or '76 in Amarillo, @ the World Nationals. In this pic, it was running SS3/GA An aticle on FB says this: "... This is the famous race car of Royce Fowlers - the Packin Poncho. This is 1 of 549 Ram Air IV with a manual transmission. It was originally commissioned in 1969 to be a super stock race car and only has 5124 miles clocked on the odometer..." https://www.facebook.com/krybabyperf...4468627055298/ http://www.oneownercollectorcar.com/...o-royce-fowler Last edited by oldskool; 09-30-2021 at 01:24 AM. |
